Robert Downey Jr. will not bring Doctor Doom to the big screen until December, but on the comics page, Victor Von Doom has already conquered nearly everything in sight. Marvel has spent the past two years turning its greatest villain into the center of its entire publishing line, and the timing, right as Avengers: Doomsday approaches, is anything but coincidental.
The emperor who won
It started with 2025’s line-wide event One World Under Doom, in which Doom seized the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme and, from there, took control of the entire planet, a status quo shift Marvel openly compared to classic upheavals like Dark Reign. For a stretch, Doom genuinely ruled the Marvel Universe. The event reached a startling conclusion last November when Doom sacrificed himself to undo the accidental death of his goddaughter, Valeria Richards, seemingly fading into cosmic dust in front of Reed Richards.
Death is rarely the end
Of course, in comics, a sacrifice is rarely the final word, especially for a character about to headline a billion-dollar movie. Doom’s saga has continued to ripple across Marvel’s books through 2026’s Armageddon event, with titles like Chip Zdarsky’s Captain America throwing Steve Rogers and Doom together in a desperate afterlife war. The Fantastic Four, meanwhile, have been left to reckon with the aftermath of Doom’s reign and the new world it left behind.
Doom everywhere you look
Beyond the main line, Marvel has flooded the shelves with Doom-centric stories clearly designed to build anticipation for his cinematic debut. The DoomQuest miniseries strands the villain in a time-travel epic, while the prose finale What If… The Multiverse Was Doomed? pits America Chavez and Kitty Pryde against a Doom bent on conquering every timeline. Taken together, it is one of the most sustained villain pushes Marvel has attempted in years.
The strategy is clear
None of this is subtle, and it does not need to be. With Downey’s Doom set to reshape the Marvel Cinematic Universe across Doomsday and the eventual Secret Wars, Marvel Comics is making sure that new readers who wander into a shop looking for the character will find him exactly where he wants to be: on the throne, at the center of everything.
