Sixty years ago, a redhead leaned against a doorway, delivered one of the most famous lines in comics history, and changed Spider-Man forever. This month, Marvel celebrates that legacy with Mary Jane: Face It, Tiger #1, a one-shot honoring six decades of Mary Jane Watson.
Six decades of a Marvel icon
Mary Jane made her proper debut back in 1965’s Amazing Spider-Man #42, capping off a running gag in which Peter Parker kept dodging his Aunt May’s attempts to set him up with the girl next door. When MJ finally turned to face him with the now-legendary greeting, “Face it, Tiger, you just hit the jackpot”, a Marvel legend was born. In the sixty years since, she has been a party girl, a supermodel, Peter Parker’s great love and occasional wife, and even, briefly, a host for the Venom symbiote.
Three eras, one celebration
Released August 5, the anniversary special gathers three separate stories spotlighting different eras of MJ’s long history, plus an epilogue that points toward her future in the Marvel Universe. It is a fitting structure for a character who has been reinvented many times without ever losing the sharp wit and independence that made her a fan favorite in the first place.

The milestone arrives at a charged moment for the wall-crawler’s world. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day dominating the box office, Spidey is arguably more culturally visible than he has been in years, and Mary Jane has always been an essential part of that story. Whether you know her from the comics, the films, or the games, Face It, Tiger is a reminder that some supporting characters are every bit as iconic as the heroes they stand beside.
