Season 9.5, the mid-season update to the hero shooter’s ongoing “The Mystery of Thebes” run, goes live today, Friday, August 7, 2026, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It brings a new playable hero, a chunky technical upgrade, fresh events, and a wave of cosmetics.
The Hood joins as a first-of-its-kind tank
The headline addition is Parker Robbins, better known as The Hood, stepping into the roster as a Vanguard, the game’s tank role. What makes him notable is that he’s built as a ranged tank, a profile the Vanguard pool hasn’t really had before. He fights with twin pistols for long-range cover fire while leaning on dark magic to shield teammates, and he can switch between his human and demonic forms mid-battle. His Ultimate unleashes his full demonic power, firing shield-piercing shots while boosting the health of nearby allies.
Notably, Season 9.5 skips adding a Duelist entirely, a real shift given how Duelist-heavy recent updates have leaned. The Hood is voiced by WWE Superstar Damian Priest, and if the name rings a bell beyond the comics, he recently turned up in the MCU series Ironheart.
A rare update that makes the game smaller
Here’s the part players are cheering loudest: the update actually shrinks the game. Through a new texture and asset recompression system, the install size drops by roughly 40GB on PC and around 15GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no stated loss in visual quality. One caveat worth knowing before you start downloading: the update itself is larger than usual, and the install only shrinks once it finishes. In an era of ballooning install sizes, a major patch that gives storage back is a genuinely welcome move.
Events, cosmetics, and a balance pass
The Creed of Akkaba event kicks off on day one, and a Pick Your Own store bundle lets players choose from three costumes at launch: The Hood’s Sinful Blackout, Iron Fist’s Furious Flow, and Moon Knight’s Fist of Khonshu. Lady Loki is getting customizable movement and ability animations, and the Krakoan Reels event returns for another round. As always, the patch arrives with a full balance pass tuning the hero roster.
Looking just past the weekend, the Summer Festival’s second volume begins the following week with a new batch of summer-themed cosmetics for a lineup of heroes. Season 9.5 is scheduled to run through mid-September, giving players roughly five weeks with The Hood before the next cycle begins.
