Game Freak Steps Outside Pokemon With ‘Beast of Reincarnation’

Published:

For most of its existence, Game Freak has been synonymous with one thing: Pokemon. That changed on August 4, when the studio released Beast of Reincarnation, its most prominent game outside the franchise and a dramatic tonal departure from catching cute creatures. This is a somber, Souls-inspired action RPG about survival at the end of the world.

One woman, one dog, one ruined world

Published by Fictions and available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (with a day-one spot on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate), Beast of Reincarnation is billed as a “one-person, one-dog action RPG.” It follows Emma, an outcast with the power to manipulate plant life, and her canine companion Koo as they travel across a post-apocalyptic Japan consumed by a corruption known as the Blight. The two are bound together in combat as much as in story, and reviewers have singled out Koo as one of the most endearing animal companions in recent memory.

Combat is the star

The moment-to-moment fighting is where the game earns its praise. Critics have described a fast, parry-focused system that clicks into something spectacular during major boss encounters, drawing frequent comparisons to Sekiro. When Emma’s bows, blade, and abilities interlock, the combat sings. Several reviewers noted that this brilliance shines brightest in big set-piece battles rather than in the quieter stretches between them.

A split verdict

The overall reception has been mixed but broadly positive. The game holds around 76 on OpenCritic and 73 on Metacritic across dozens of critics, with individual scores swinging from as high as the low 9s down to a handful of 5s. The recurring knocks are familiar for an ambitious first effort in a new genre: uneven story pacing, a protagonist some found hard to warm to, thin enemy variety, and PC performance issues at launch.

It is worth noting that much of the development was reportedly handled by external partners, with Game Freak leading creative direction and project management rather than building the whole thing in-house.

Why it matters

Even with the caveats, Beast of Reincarnation is a notable swing. It is proof that the studio behind gaming’s biggest franchise is willing to take real creative risks, and it represents a clear visual and mechanical leap over Game Freak’s recent Pokemon output. It may not be a flawless debut in the action space, but it is a genuinely intriguing one, and the developer has already signaled that regular post-launch updates are on the way.
