Denis Villeneuve is returning to Arrakis one last time, and he is walking straight into a fight. Dune: Part Three, the filmmaker’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, is locked for December 18, 2026, the same day Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday storms into theaters. Two of the biggest event films of the year, opening head to head, on IMAX screens both desperately want.
The end of Paul’s journey
Where the first two films charted Paul Atreides’ rise, Part Three is about the wreckage of victory. Set years after Paul seized control of the Imperium, it finds him a ruthless emperor grappling with the consequences of the holy war unleashed in his name. It is a deliberately harder, stranger, more political story than its predecessors, and Villeneuve has said as much, framing this chapter as a deconstruction of the messiah figure the earlier films built up. This is not about becoming a savior. It is about surviving being one.
The cast returns, and so does the dead
Nearly the entire core ensemble is back: Timothee Chalamet as Paul, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Paul’s sister Alia. Perhaps most intriguingly, Jason Momoa returns as Duncan Idaho, confirming that the character’s story continues past his apparent death, and Robert Pattinson joins the franchise for the finale. Hans Zimmer is back to score, and Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplay. Principal photography wrapped in late 2025 across Budapest and Abu Dhabi.
The December showdown
Warner Bros. and Legendary set this date long ago, and so far neither Dune nor Doomsday has blinked. Both are IMAX-driven spectacles chasing the same premium screens and the same holiday audience, which means one of the most anticipated box office duels in recent memory is shaping up for mid-December. Villeneuve released the first trailer in July at a global IMAX fan event, and if Part Two‘s reception is any guide, Dune fans will turn out in force. Whether there is enough oxygen in the room for two giants remains the great unanswered question of the season.
