What it’s about
The premise is pure high-stakes spectacle: the most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior, before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything. It’s an original story rather than an adaptation or sequel, a rarity for a film at this scale, and a reunion of serious awards-season talent both in front of and behind the camera.
The cast and crew
Tom Cruise leads as the title character, alongside a stacked ensemble that includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons, with Robert John Burke, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman, and Sophie Wilde also featured. Iñárritu directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, from a story by Iñárritu and Berman.
Behind the camera, Iñárritu reunites with longtime collaborator and Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, with a score from composer Cosmo Sheldrake. Notably, the film was shot entirely in VistaVision, the high-resolution large-format process that has seen a recent revival among filmmakers chasing maximum image quality.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, Digger opens in theaters and IMAX across North America on October 2, 2026, with international rollout beginning September 30, 2026. Given the pedigree involved, an Iñárritu original built around Cruise and shot in VistaVision, this one is shaping up to be one of the fall’s most distinctive big-screen events.
